BGT winner Colin Thackery shops in supermarket and takes bus after £250,000 win

Colin Thackery may have won Britain’s Got Talent, but he showed he is not letting fame go to his head as he picked up his own groceries.

After his supermarket trip, the war veteran, 89, hopped on the bus, despite bagging a £250,000 prize in the ITV talent show last week.

Smartly dressed in a dark uniform, the kindly Chelsea Pensioner was happy to chat to fans who were delighted to see him out in London.

Colin lives at the veterans’ residence Royal Hospital Chelsea, in South West London, which he says he plans to donate all of his prize money to.

In London he proudly sported his prestigious army uniform.

He will sing at the Royal Variety Performance, as part of his prize for winning BGT this year.


Colin has become a huge hit with the ladies since his triumph on Sunday night.

The 89-year-old scooped the £250,000 prize singing Love Changes Everything on the grand final.

He's now spoken out about finding fame on TV, revealing he's loving all the attention from female fans.

Colin told The Sun : "I don't think I'm a heart-throb, but I'm getting a lot of attention from the ladies.

"I'm not complaining, mind!"


Colin sang in memory of his late wife of more 60 years, Joan, who died three years ago, on the show on Sunday night.

Since the loss of his wife, he has lived at the Chelsea Pensioners' residence, Royal Hospital Chelsea, in South West London.

After his win, he pledged to donate some of his prize money to The Chelsea Pensioners.

Speaking on Britain's Got More Talent, Colin told host Stephen Mulhern about his plans for the winnings.

When asked what would spend the money on fist, Colin, who lives in Royal Hospital Chelsea, said: "I live in a wonderful place and I want to make a donation to that."


The Chelsea Pensioner also revealed that he only auditioned for the show after being dared.

He explained: "I can’t believe this has happened. It all started as a dare a year ago. One of the guys as I was coming off the stage at our club having sung after the curry lunch…

"He said 'when are you going to do it? Would you go on Britain’s Got Talent?’

"I said 'don’t be silly'."


While Colin moved may fans to tears, some were not happy with the result after magician X's spectacular identity reveal during the finale.

Throughout the show X's true face has remained a mystery and at the finale it was unveiled as 2018 golden buzzer act Marc Spelmann.

It was dubbed one of the greatest BGT twists ever, but wasn't enough to win him the top spot.


Viewers flocked to Twitter to rage over the result.

One tweeted: "Another fix on #BGT X should have won, best moment I've ever seen on that show!!"
