Chris Evans, 55, has recalled the time he rejected a role in Danny Boyle’s iconic movie Trainspotting back in 1996. The Virgin Radio host admitted the reason for his somewhat surprising career decision, came as he was enjoying glasses of champagne down the pub with singer Sir Tom Jones, 80.
I was at the pub with Tom Jones!
Chris explained the film scene he was meant to be in while presenting his Virgin Radio Breakfast show alongside co-host Vassos Alexander.
He said: “Then he [Ewan McGregor’s character Mark Renton] drowns into the toilet, but coming out of the hypodermic syringe there was a game show, an internal game show, taking place in the liquid in the syringe.
“It was Dale Winton with this sort of funkadelic, fifth-dimension game show. They asked me to do it, I said, ‘No’.”
Trainspotting focuses on the story of Ewan’s character Mark who is an unemployed heroin addict living in Edinburgh.
Although Chris was reportedly asked to make a cameo in the cult-hit movie, after he politely declined, the late Dale Winton, known for presenting Supermarket Sweep at the time stepped in.
In the clip Dale appeared in, protagonist Mark is having hallucinations after his parents attempt to make him go without drugs after locking him in his bedroom.
While going “cold turkey” he has a number of hallucinations, including seeing Dale Winton acting as the imagined TV host of a game show.
However, despite Chris reflecting on the missed opportunity, it seems as though the radio host is sure he made the right decision, as he described being preoccupied on a night out with Sir Tom.
He divulged: “I was at the pub with Tom Jones! What would you have done?
“Pub with Tom Jones or some kind of legacy, famous legacy, infinite legacy, cinematic infinite legacy…”
Vassos answered with no hesitation: “Trainspotting every day of the week.”
Outraged, Chris responded: “I don’t believe you!”

Trainspotting went on to gross over £70 million at the Box Office and has since had a sequel, T2 Trainspotting, made.
The former husband of Billie Piper divulged how the Sex Bomb hitmaker downed an extraordinary amount of champagne during their booze-fuelled night out.
He continued: “Tom Jones is at the bar… he drank so much champagne that day. Let me tell you.”
However, the singer appears to be much more careful around alcohol these days as The Voice UK coach shared he only has a single Cognac after having dinner.
Tom revealed to Daily Express: “I don’t drink as a rule anymore, because the hangovers are so much harder to shake off.
“I used to love to drink, quite a drop, but drink is a younger person’s game.
“I love a Cognac after dinner, with a cigar and a coffee.
“For me, those three things have to go together,” he added.
