This Morning presenter Ruth Langsford, 61, has slammed her husband Eamonn Holmes’, 61, first choice of name for their son when he was born, branding his coveted moniker “pathetic.” Appearing on the ITV breakfast show as stand-in presenters for usual hosts Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield, Eamonn’s wife of 11 years blasted her husband’s preferred name for their son.

And you said it was sad and pathetic

Discussing their colleague’s decision to name her son Lisbon Lion, Ruth explained that co-presenter Dr Zoe Williams had named her son after the city, as it was where she had met her partner Stuart McKay.

Wanting to know more, Eamonn asked: “Is he a Celtic supporter?”

Ruth replied: “I have no idea, darling.”

Adding that his wife was giving him a funny look, Eamonn presented an alternative explanation for the newborn’s name.

He said: “Now you’re looking at me like that, but the child’s called Lisbon Lion – Celtic won the European cup in Portugal in Lisbon in 1967.”

However, Ruth insisted that she was clueless: “I’m just saying that I don’t know.”

Eamonn continued: “They were known as the Lisbon Lions.”

Attempting to pacify her husband, Ruth said: “Well, OK, if that’s your theory.”

However, it was then that Eamonn jumped in and light-heartedly accused his wife of putting her foot down over a football-inspired name for their own son.

Eamonn quipped: “You stopped me calling our child Alex.”

“After Alex Ferguson,” Ruth clarified.

Still upset over the incident, avid Manchester United fan Eamonn retorted: “And you said it was sad and pathetic.”

Loose Women star Ruth replied proudly: “I did!”

The couple went on to add that they named their 18-year-old son Jack, which Ruth branded a “good, solid” name.

Returning to the original conversation about the origin of Dr Zoe’s son’s name, Ruth said that they would personally ask the medical professional about whether her son was named after the Lisbon Lions.

Eamonn and Ruth met in 1997 when he was at GMTV.

Five years later, they welcomed son Jack, their only child together, and in 2010 were married.

The Irish native shares three children with his first wife Gabrielle, who he split from in 1996 after a decade of marriage.

In April, Eamonn announced the happy news that his son Declan, 32, is expecting his first child with wife Jenny in July.

Taking to social media, he wrote: “Declan is my eldest boy, he’s 32 years of age, and that is Jenny his beloved wife and they have just announced that I – together with Valerie and Robin [Jenny’s parents] and Gabrielle [Declan’s mother] we are all going to be grandparents!”
