Kit Harington on therapy, fame and 'feeling unsafe' before checking into rehab

Kit Harington has checked into rehab to get treatment for alcohol and stress issues, following the finale of Game Of Thrones.

The 32-year-old checked into the $120,000 (£94,000) a month luxury wellness retreat Privé-Swiss in Connecticut, where he has access to psychological coaching, cognitive behavioral therapy and meditation.

A representative for Kit confirmed in a statement to ‘Kit has decided to utilise this break in his schedule as an opportunity to spend some time at a wellness retreat to work on some personal issues.’

The actor reportedly checked into the centre nearly a month ago, before the finale of Game Of Thrones ended.

Kit has been open about how Game Of Thrones, its ending and becoming one of the most famous men on TV has affected him, admitting that he turned to therapy to cope with the strain of the HBO series focusing on his character Jon Snow.

In the season five finale of Game Of Thrones, Jon was killed by Alliser Thorne and a number of the Night’s Watch men, with fans feverishly speculating whether Snow was actually dead for good.

In season six, we discovered that Melisandre brought Jon back from the dead – but Kit spent months under intense attention and pressure as the cliffhanger put the spotlight on him.

Speaking to Variety, Harington explained: ‘My darkest period was when the show seemed to become so much about Jon, when he died and came back. I really didn’t like the focus of the whole show coming onto Jon — even though it was invalidating my problem about being the weak link because things were about Jon.

‘When you become the cliffhanger of a TV show, and a TV show probably at the height of its power, the focus on you is f***ing terrifying.’

Kit started therapy during this period, after feeling that he couldn’t even act.

He said: ‘It wasn’t a very good time in my life. I felt I had to feel that I was the most fortunate person in the world, when actually, I felt very vulnerable. I had a shaky time in my life around there — like I think a lot of people do in their 20s.

‘That was a time when I started therapy, and started talking to people. I had felt very unsafe, and I wasn’t talking to anyone. I had to feel very grateful for what I have, but I felt incredibly concerned about whether I could even f***ing act.’

Fast forward to season eight, with the cast of Thrones wrapping up an eight-year journey as their characters – many of them growing up on screen.

And Kit in particular struggled to say goodbye to Jon.

The actor, who is married to Ygritte actress Rose Leslie, told Esquire: ‘My final day of shooting, I felt fine . . . I felt fine . . . I felt fine. . .

Then I went to do my last shots and started hyperventilating a bit. Then they called, “Wrap!” And I just f***ing broke down.

‘It was this onslaught of relief and grief about not being able to do this again. It wasn’t so much about Jon. It was about not being in this world, not getting to smell those smells, fight those fights, be with these people—the whole package.’

He added that he felt like he was ‘being skinned’ when it came time for him to take off his costume for the last time.

Following the finale, clips from the final cast readthrough have been released, showing Kit crying as he realised that his character Jon was to kill Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) in the last episode.
