The Real Reason Prince Philip Refused To Get Involved In Harry And Meghan’s Drama

A month before Prince Philip’s death, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle sat down with Oprah Winfrey for a shocking tell-all interview. “Megxit” actually began when the couple decided that they wanted to leave the nest and foster a new modern monarchy at the start of 2020. At the time, they aimed to achieve financial independence and wanted to step away from their official duties. They then flew over the pond to start a new life in the United States and decided to speak to Winfrey.

In the interview, they stunned the world with shocking tidbits about their life as U.K. royals. They claimed that there were concerns about the unborn Archie Mountbatten’s potential skin color, that Meghan Markle never received any royal training, and that pleas regarding the mental health of the new Duchess of Sussex were ignored. Harry later told the Queen of All Media that his grandparents never raised any concerns about the color of Archie’s skin.

According to Deadline, Queen Elizabeth officially stripped her grandson and his wife of their royal patronages and honorary military titles a year after the agreement was drawn up in January 2020. She had given them time to change their minds, but they were comfortable with their new life. Prince Philip did not feature heavily in their story for a reason, per the Daily MailLet’s dig into why he decided to remain quiet when his grandson went rogue.

Prince Philip's words rang true

The Duke of Edinburgh was absent in the initial discussion when Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced that they wanted to leave the monarchy. Gyles Brandreth, Prince Philip’s friend of 40 years, shared the scoop with Daily Mail about why the nonagenarian stayed out of the Megxit discussions. Apparently, Prince Philip sympathized with Harry and Meghan’s life, but he reportedly didn’t think that they were making the right decision because they were “naïve,” adding, “It’s his life.” Brandreth added, “He said to me: ‘People have got to lead their lives as they think best.” It appears as if the duke did not want to force Harry to do something that he didn’t want to do.

When Queen Elizabeth, Prince Charles, Prince William, and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex convened at Sandringham to discuss their exit, Prince Philip chose to stay clear. “I’ll soon be out of it and not before time,” the queen’s consort allegedly said. Sadly, the duke was correct when he seemingly foretold that he would not live much longer. Perhaps Meghan and Harry can take a leaf out of Prince Philip’s book and choose relationships above duty. And maybe William, Charles, and Harry can mend their ever-widening rift before it becomes too wide.
