The inner workings of the British royal family is, for the most part, kept out of the public eye. However, royal admirers have been treated with glimpses of the family’s close relationships throughout the decades. One special royal relationship is that of Queen Elizabeth II and her grandson Prince William, who is second-in-line to the throne behind his father, Prince Charles, and will one day be king (via the BBC). But what is the truth about the Queen’s relationship with Prince William?
According to The Express, there have been many reports over the years that suggest that Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Cambridge share a close relationship, and the pair are often seen enjoying each other’s company at royal events. However, due to William’s position as heir to the throne, the queen has been forced to balance the role of doting grandmother and royal mentor to her grandson, as she helps to prepare William for the responsibilities that lie ahead.
Speaking in the ITV documentary Our Queen at 90 back in 2016, the Duke of Cambridge gave a rare insight into his relationship with his grandmother. “Growing up, having this figurehead, having this stability above me has been incredible.” He continued, “I have been able to explore, understand, slightly carve my own path. I greatly appreciate and value that protection.”
The Queen and Prince William's relationship has grown stronger
In the wake of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s decision to step back as senior royals and their bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey, Prince William’s relationship with the queen has reportedly grown even stronger (via Hello Magazine).
Speaking to the Sunday Times royal correspondent Roya Nikkhah, sources close to William revealed the Duke is “completely accepting” of his role within the royal family, adding that “he is very much his grandmother’s grandson in that respect of duty and service.”
Per Tatler, the source added that Prince William was very much involved in discussions with the queen about how Buckingham Palace should respond to the potentially damaging claims made by Harry and Meghan during the CBS sit-down, including that a senior royal had made speculative comments about baby Archie’s skin color.
Because of his response to this recent royal scandal, a source revealed to the Sunday Times that William’s position within the family is now held in even greater regard by Her Majesty the Queen. “That has changed the way the Queen sees him and values his input,” the source commented, adding that William believes his relationship with his grandmother has “massively improved” and they are “more aligned than ever.”
