Tom Jones confession: Voice star admitted he ‘could duet with Prince Charles’

The Voice: Tom Jones jokes he’s ‘blocked’ Olly Murs

Sir Tom is set to appear in ITV’s The Voice, which returns to screens tonight, alongside other judges like and Olly Murs. The show is renowned for finding some of the UK’s top vocal talent, and Sir Tom joined the reality TV programme in 2012, winning its inaugural season with singer Leanne Mitchell. Along the way, Sir Tom has wowed audience with performances, dueting with an array of stars, but in one confession the Welshman admitted a royal collaboration could be on the cards.

Sir Tom has a long association with the Royal Family, and has previously collected accolades from the Firm, including an OBE and then a knighthood in 2006.

Since then the legend has been a major supporter of The Prince’s Trust, a foundation set up by Charles to help vulnerable youngsters “get their lives on track”.

During a trip to Barbados in 2019, Charles and his wife Camilla Parker Bowles met up with Sir Tom, as well as fellow music royalty Lionel Richie – who also supports The Prince’s Trust.

Reflecting on his meeting, Sir Tom discussed how Charles does “wonderful work”, describing his charity as “a fantastic thing to be associated with”.

During a chat with Charles, the crooner told Charles that “any time I can sing for you, as long as I’m available, I’ll be there”, in a touching moment between the pair.

And when asked about the prospect of a dream trio of Lionel and Charles teaming up with himself to perform a track, Sir Tom teased: “It could happen.

“You never know. I wouldn’t never rule anything out.”

His comments to Channel 5 came after Charles made a cheeky joke to Lionel, who is renowned for his hit song Hello.

According to reports at the time, Charles – then 70 – said to the singer: “It must have been you I was looking for.”

A stunned Lionel then responded: “Oh, did you say that? He did say that.”

Describing his time with the Trust, Lionel added: “It was wonderful because it was something I would want to do anyway and to get something on a global basis of this magnitude would take years.

“Between my connections and His Royal Highness’ connections, we can do a lot of good for a lot of people.”

Sir Tom has previously described the emotion and pride he felt in earning royal recognition, particularly of his knighthood, which recognised his contribution to music.

Speaking in 2015 to the Big Issue, he said he was “knighted by one of the greatest monarchs ever known” in a sweet nod towards Charles’ mother, the Queen.

He admitted that it was the “one thing that would really impress the teenage me”, arguing the honour was “a thing I’d never even dreamt of”.

He added: “Hit records, I was up for that. Hit TV series, I was up for that.

“Making it in America, I was up for that. But being knighted… I’ve always been a royalist.

“And I was knighted by one of the greatest monarchs ever known. That’s a big deal to me.”

The Voice is on ITV tonight from 8.30pm.
