It might be almost halfway to the next one, but that hasn’t stopped almost half the country gearing up to celebrate last Christmas in June, and Kevin the Carrot is back to help.

It’s being heralded as ‘Junemas’, and 47% of Brits have confessed to making plans to celebrate the Christmas we never had and Aldi has promised to provide the mince pies.

With the tightest COVID restrictions having been in place on December 25, Christmas plans had to be put on hold for much of the UK.

However, when restrictions loosen on June 25, many have made plans to have the Christmas lunch that 2020 missed.

Writing on Facebook, the budget retailer wrote: "Have a very merry #AldiJunemas. Because you didn't get the Christmas you deserved this year, we're celebrating again on 25th June!

"Look out for our favourite Junemas Mince Pies in store from 21st June!"

The post backfired when Aldi’s more cynical shoppers accused the retailer of jumping on the bandwagon to ‘shift out of date stock’.

One customer asked: "Who had loads of leftover Christmas stock that were due to go out of date?"

While another quipped: "More like you couldn’t sell them in December, so we’ll try to get rid of them again."

Aldi insisted to Manchester Evening News that it is definitely not the case that they need to shift old stock.

They said: "Aldi saw conversation starting around Junemas and wanted to bring back our favourite festive treat to add to the celebrations."

Julie Ashfield, Managing Director of Buying at Aldi, says: “The first Friday post-lockdown will feel like Christmas, as we all get to meet up with friends and family after months apart.”

“We thought let’s make it a Junemas to remember by bringing back the nation’s festive favourite – mince pies – to help celebrate this very special occasion.”

However, aside from the odd Grinch, most customers are excited about the novel idea.

One gushed: "I could eat your mince pies any time; the pastry is yummy."

As another exclaimed: "Great idea! We did a Christmas Dinner in July last year. So mince pies in July… jolly well, yes."

Follow Aldi as it gears up for the summer celebrations on #AldiJunemas and let's shoppers pick the Christmas favourites that will appear in store alongside the mince pies.
