On Christmas Day we are normally treated to a small glimpse of what the Royal Family get up to as they all venture to St Mary Magdalene Church in Sandringham.

On the big day we see the likes of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie and, of course, The Queen dressed in their finest to partake in the tradition.

From fancy hats to gorgeous coats, the Royals don't let down their style standards for Christmas.

Sadly this year we wont get to see the households gather at the Sandringham estate – but we're not going to let that stop us from taking a look back at some of our favourite looks from over the years…

When it comes to attending St Mary Magdalene's Church, the ladies have strict outfit protocols which they still have to follow, even at Christmas.

Coats must finish below the knee and they have to please The Queen by wearing either nude of black tights, but being the professionals that they are, each Royal lady still ticks all of the style boxes.

The Queen

How could we not start with the matriarch of the family, Queen Elizabeth herself?

After decades of leading the event, one of Her Majesty's most chic moments was in 2015 when she sported a bold red coat that was finished off with a monochrome faux-fur cuffs and collar by Royal dresser Angela Kelly.

In true Royal style, the effortless look was finished off with a matching hat and a red rimmed umbrella to echo the festive-inspired ensemble.

Kate Middleton

In 2019, Kate oozed sophistication and elegance in a stunning long grey coat by Royal favourite Catherine Walker.

Not only did she accessorise the protocol-ticking look with a forest green Sylvia Fletcher hat, clutch and matching heels but in true Kate fashion, she chose these colours specifically to match the coat of Princess Charlotte.

Whilst this might not have been the Duchess's favourite look, as she admitted to a fan that she was too hot, we think it's one of her best.

Meghan Markle

For her first time taking part in the tradition, Meghan Markle made sure to dress to impress in 2017.

Keeping to her tailored and fashionable style, the Duchess opted for a tonal look with an amazing sand coloured Sentaler coat.

This was styled with brown accent accessories with a pair of Stuart Weitzman boots, a matching fascinator and a Chloé bag.

The Countess of Wessex

One occasion where we saw a member of the Royal Family break the tradition came thanks to none other than Sophie, Countess of Wessex.

In 2017, the mum-of-two went against the grain of plain designs and showed up in a fabulous floral Erdem dress.

The navy and pink botanical-printed garment made sure she stood out from the crowd and was perfectly accessorised with colour-coordinated court heels, a clutch bag and a simple headband.

The Duchess of Cornwall

Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall arrived at a very snowy church service in 2009 in an outfit perfect for a Royal lady.

Attending the Christmas Day event, Camilla made sure to wrap up warm in a teal blue coat and matching brown suede boots and matching gloves.

She made sure to keep it classy with a gold brooch and a polka dot neck scarf.

Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie

Two people who are no strangers to the world of fashion and style are sisters Princess Beatrice and Eugenie.

In 2015, the siblings looked regal in coordinating blue looks and black hats.

Princess Beatrice opted for a dark navy blue shade while Eugenie wore a jewel-toned, double-breasted coat.

Princess Diana

Last but not least, one lady who knew how to always tick the style boxes was none other than Princess Diana.

Back in 1990, Diana stunned in a tailored purple coat dress which had her signature stylish touch of contrasting black and white striped lapels and cuffs.

Setting standards for the future Royal ladies, Diana actually previously wore the same outfit the year before in 1989, for the same event.
