Ikea launches new functional collection for people with disabilities

Ikea has announced that it will launch a new collection of furniture specially designed for people with disabilities.

The functional furniture will be released in May 2020, and was announced during the store’s annual Deomcratic Design Day.

The OMTANKSAM collection will be made to assist people with disabilities with different kinds of functional needs, to make getting around the house easier and more comfortable.

The range will feature products for the bedroom, bathroom and kitchen, with products including additional padding for seats, vases that are easier to lift and jar grippers.

The new collection is being released because Ikea wants to change the way companies address disabilities.

The name of the collection, OMTANKSAM, means ‘thoughtful’ – which the range most certainly is.

Ikea said: ‘About 15% of the world’s population live with some form of disability.

‘With the OMTÄNKSAM range – developed in collaboration with ergonomists, physiotherapists and researchers – Ikea is helping people overcome obstacles that make it difficult to enjoy an independent life by adding extra comfort and functionality.

‘Ikea’s vision has always been to create a better everyday life for the many people. That includes all individuals with different kinds of functional needs – from children to the elderly and everyone in between.’
