Laundry detergent can do a lot more than just clean your clothing. This cleaning solution can be a powerful agent for a myriad of fabrics and surfaces. Express.co.uk has rounded up the best cleaning hacks for laundry detergent.

Unblocking a drain

A sink can also be unclogged using laundry detergent.

To use laundry detergent to clear a clogged drain, just pour some of the liquid down the drain and let it sit for a few minutes.

Once this time has passed, pour boiling water down the drain.

Hand soap

If you mix laundry detergent and water with a 1:1 ratio, you can use the mixture as a hand soap alternative.

For those in need of extra strength hand cleaner, laundry detergent can also be used with oil to make a homemade cleaner.

Mix one teaspoon of laundry detergent and one teaspoon of vegetable oil to create an extra-strength hand cleaner.

All-purpose cleaner

You can create your own all-purpose cleaning solution using bleach, laundry detergent and water.

To make this solution mix 80ml of bleach, one teaspoon of powdered laundry detergent and 4.5 litres of water in a bucket.

This cleaning solution can be used on walls and bathroom surfaces but should be used with care considering the use of bleach.

Car wash

Laundry detergent is a gentle enough cleaning solution that it can also be used to wash the exterior of your care without damaging the surface or paint.

But you should make sure to dilute it with one tablespoon of laundry detergent per bucket of water.

Anything stronger could be damaging for your vehicle’s paintwork.

Cleaning oven racks

Greasy oven racks can be a nightmare to clean.

But laundry detergent can be a great way to clean them.

To clean oven racks using laundry detergent simply place them in a bathtub or large bin with hot water until the racks are submerged and then add 180ml of laundry detergent.

Let the racks sit in this solution overnight and in the morning use a sponge or brush to wipe away the remaining grease.

Floor cleaner

Laundry detergent can also be used to make an effective floor cleaner.

To use this solution add one teaspoon of laundry detergent to a bucket of hot water and mop your floors.

The cleaning enzymes in detergent are effective at pulling dirt from floors.

Take care though and make sure to wring out as much water as possible from your mop as you clean, otherwise, it will be too wet and may leave streaks.
