Few people would be daring enough to try a micro-fringe, yet alone cut one in themselves at home – but Lily Allen has shown yet again she’s not afraid to push the boundaries.

The singer and actress popped up on Instagram Stories to show off the results of her DIY hair makeover, which involved a bold new short fringe.

Not content with taking her fringe halfway up her forehead, Lily also took the opportunity to refresh her hair dye.

“Cut and coloured my own hair using @joshwoodcolour,” she posted, flicking her impressively shiny hair at the camera. She looks to have opted for an ultra dark shade like 2.0 from the range by celebrity hairdresser Josh Wood, £14 here.

She hasn’t revealed the reason for her impromptu transformation but, rather intriguingly, she tagged her regular hairdresser Jake Gallagher and added: “Why do you think @jakegallagherhair”.

It does make us wonder if there’s a story behind the new look. Maybe Lily’s been bingeing on Netflix’s The Queen’s Gambit, which tells the story of a female chess player who masters the micro-fringe along with her board moves.

Assuming she’s not pulling our leg and wearing a wig, Lily has done an impressive job with the scissors. The micro-fringe is a tricky look both to create and wear, but her line looks precise with a nice, clean curve.

Lily was clearly in a playful mood on Instagram, as she revealed her new look after posting a shaggy-haired before photo captioned “big hurr”.

She also posted the results of Instagram’s age-guessing app, tilting her face as it scanned her face. Eventually the “how old do I look” estimation settled on an answer of “12 years old”, a result that had Lily looking mightily amused.

It might have come up with a different conclusion back in lockdown one, when Lily posted a hair close-up showing a good two inches of grey root regrowth.

Back in June, fans flooded her board with praise over the post which was liked by more than 88,000 people and prompted more than 1,800 comments

“You're beautiful!!!!!! Thanks for posting this Lily!” said one fan, while another added “That’s natural beauty right there!”

However, it seems Lily cracked soon after as was back to her usual dark brunette shade just a couple of weeks later.

The Josh Wood permanent home kit she used for her latest colouring session is an appropriate choice as it’s particularly aimed at covering grey roots.

It’s a great pick for anyone worrying about how dye might affect their condition, as it can be combined with Josh’s new Miracle Shot, £29 here, with dye and toning shot, which actually leaves hair stronger after colouring.
