DEAR DEIDRE: MY wife’s family are overpowering and round our house every day. They treated lockdown rules like a joke and I get no alone-time with my wife.
We’ve been married for a year. I’m 29 and my wife is 27. We bought a house next door to her sister, her husband and kids. They tipped us off it was cheap, as it needed doing up, but it was a big mistake.

My in-laws and my wife’s aunt, uncle and cousins live just round the corner.
They are all in and out of each other’s houses all the time and “pop in” here every single day, staying for hours at a time.
I’m back at work now after being furloughed and someone is always here, all evening. They are all overbearing – her mum especially. I bite my tongue but they endlessly voice their unwanted opinions.
DEIDRE SAYS: Your wife holds the key. She has grown up in this very close extended family and this all seems normal to her.
You must have a serious talk with her. Explain you love her and want more time just with her. Be firm you must obey social distancing and the “rule of six”, for everyone’s safety.
Suggest you tell her family together you need more privacy and relaxation. In future, you will welcome them when you invite them.
Maybe organise to see family, no more than four at a time, round your place on Saturday afternoons – outside, if need be.
But be firm you need quiet evening weekdays. It might ruffle some feathers but this is your marriage and your home – and your health and safety.
