Five people died and at least 30 were injured in the explosion at the Grand Hotel.

Trade and Industry Secretary Norman Tebbit’s wife Margaret was paralysed below the neck.

The perpetrator Patrick Magee was sent to prison in 1986. He was later released in 1999 under the Good Friday Agreement.

51 years ago (1972)

Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 crashed in the remote Andes mountains of western Argentina leaving around 30 survivors.

During the following 72 days, 13 more passengers died due to the freezing temperatures while the survivors were forced to resort to cannibalism.

13 years ago (2010)

All 33 miners trapped after an accident at a copper and gold mine in Copiapó, Chile arrived at the surface after a record 69 days underground.

An estimated one billion people watched around the globe as the men were winched to the surface one at a time in a purpose-built capsule, during an international rescue effort.
