Though Queen Elizabeth II continues to work and take on her royal duties, it seems that Prince Charles will be stepping up to take on more duties and work as he prepares for his future role as king.

Prince Andrew, Duke of York, has been royal his entire life, and he’s always loved the access that it’s given him. However, in 2019, questions about his friendship and ties to the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein began to arise.

At first, Prince Andrew tried to ignore the talk about his friendship with Epstein. However, when it all became too much, he gave an ill-advised interview with BBC News Night, defending his connection to the American financier, The outrage was quick, and following a discussion with Prince Charles and Queen Elizabeth, Prince Andrew stepped away from royal life.

“It has become clear to me over the last few days that the circumstances relating to my former association with Jeffrey Epstein has become a major disruption to my family’s work and the valuable work going on in the many organizations and charities that I am proud to support,” he said in a statement. “Therefore, I have asked Her Majesty if I may step back from public duties for the foreseeable future, and she has given her permission.”

Prince Andrew had hoped to return to royal life

Prince Andrew had hoped to return to royal life. He even visited Liu Xiaoming, China’s ambassador to the U.K. in early 2020, which enraged people across the globe.

Prince Andrew had reportedly hoped his father’s death would shift public perception, but that is not the case. “Prince Andrew might hope that this sad situation changes things, but Prince Charles is adamant there is no way back while allegations hang over him,” royal journalist Dan Wootton told Daily Mail. “He spoke on camera in a private capacity because this is a family event. No one can stop him doing that.”
