Robin Roberts has a very personal connection to helping Colton Underwood reveal that he is gay.

Roberts reflected on her own coming-out after interviewing the former “Bachelor” in a piece that aired Wednesday on “Good Morning America.”

“I’m even exhaling because I know firsthand what it feels like to speak your truth and let everyone know beyond your family and your friends,” Roberts said on “GMA” on Wednesday after her interview with Underwood aired.

Roberts revealed publicly in 2013 that she is gay.

On Monday, Roberts, 60, also said that she related to Underwood’s revelations about religion. The former NFL player, who is a devout Christian, said that in the last year, he’s gotten closer to God because he finally started being honest.

“I know even saying that now as a gay man, people are going to be like, ‘How is that even possible?’ … I used to wake up in the morning and pray for Him to take the gay away, I used to pray for Him to change me,” Underwood said. “I can now wake up and pray to God and i can have faith and i can go into church and be present and not have it be conditional …”

Roberts told Underwood, 29, the supportive words her mother offered after the journalist’s coming-out.

“I shared with him something that my mother said when I told her about my sexuality, that I’m gay, and she said, ‘God loves you because of who He is not because of anything you do or don’t do.

“And that is something a lot of Christian gays struggle with.”
