Tesco research shows consumers cut down on meat as plant-based prices drop

Research for supermarket Tesco found that 37 per cent of us want to do our bit, but two thirds (66 per cent) of adults are unaware of the environmental impact of eating flesh. The average person’s beef consumption generates the equivalent CO2 emissions as driving 2,116 miles in a car.At least 92 per cent of Britons are meat eaters while 83 per cent claim they could not live without it.

Dr Brian Cook, of the Oxford Martin School programme on the future of food at Oxford University, said: “If we continue to eat food the way we do today, we will continue on the track to raise global temperatures by more than 1.5C.

“In the decade up to 2019 people in the UK reported reducing their meat consumption by 17 per cent, but we need to go further.”

Tesco has lowered the price of dozens of its Plant Chef products to make vegetarian eating more accessible. Derek Sarno, director of plant-based innovation, said: “The nation’s attitudes towards plant-based eating is changing. In fact, 43 per cent of meat eaters have reduced their consumption over the past two years.”
