IF you're affected by a power cut due to bad weather then your energy firm will pay you compensation.
Huge parts of the UK have fallen dark after a nationwide power outage, sparking chaos across the UK.
The amount you will get varies between £70 to £700 based on how long the power was cut for and if the power cut was planned.
You'll get £70 if the power was off for 24 hours (this can be 48 hours if it was a severe storm).
And then £70 for each following 12 hours, up to a maximum of £700 – which would be a maximum of 10 days.
You can also get an extra £75 compensation if the power goes off more than four times in one year, for more than three hours. The year runs from April 1 to March 31.
How to claim compensation
If the power cut was caused by bad weather you should be paid this compensation automatically.
If you don't then you can still try and claim. You'll need to contact your local electricity distributor and you must do with within three months of the supply being fixed.
If you have a prepayment meter how you get paid might vary. Some suppliers can credit the meter directly. Others will send you a cheque or vouchers.
You should be paid within 10 days.
If you're not happy with the result then you can take the issue to the energy ombudsman.
Does home insurance cover your fridge and freezer in a power cut?
Many of us rely on a freezer to stock up food and keep grocery bills low.
If your freeze defrosts or the contents of your fridge goes to waste during a power cut then you need to check your home insurance policy.
Insurers will normally cover the cost as long as it's included in your policy, and your appliance is under 10 years old.
In most cases insurers will ask you to give a list of what's spoiled and photos of the food before it's thrown away.
They will ask you to estimate how much it would cost in today's prices.
