There was a distinctly German feel as a huge night of darts got underway at Alexandra Palace.

While the highlight of the Tuesday evening action is the blockbuster third round tie between Raymond van Barneveld and Gerwyn Price, there was a carnival atmosphere for the opener between Jim Williams and German hero Gabriel Clemens. That was influenced by the hundreds of fans from Germany who had travelled to London, not just to cheer on Clemens but to support the tournament in general.

Hearing German songs and seeing flags in the crowds following two years of Covid interruptions was refreshing. While fans were back last year, they were predominantly from the UK due to continuing travel restrictions.

Addressing the German fan-base on commentary, Sky Sports’ Stuart Pyke said: “They [German fans] absolutely love this event. They buy tickets in their hundreds and come over here, and they just stay.

“Over 800 German fans in tonight and that’s how it will be until the World final. 800 of them every night until January 3. The sport is very popular and getting more so in Germany.”

Those watching on TV loved atmosphere created by the travelling fans too.

“Ally Pally sounds class with all the German fans, so much better than the football fans there for a p*** up,” said one.

“The German fans at the darts are incredible,” added a second.

Watching German fans were also loving the atmosphere. One said: “It's unbelievable what's going on at Ally Pally. I'm speechless.”

“Hippety hoppety, the Ally Pally is now German property,” declared a second.

Another said: “You watch the #DartsWM in Ally Pally and hear German fan chants… Unbelievable. Fingers crossed for the German Giant.”
