UEFA President Alexander Ceferin and Europe’s top clubs united to tell the remaining super League rebels: You will never get your way.
Ceferin, addressing the general assembly meeting of the European Club Association in Geneva, scathingly branded it “the disgraceful and charlatan Super League”.
And the Uefa chief was equally damning of Fifa’s plans for a World Cup every two years.
He told the club and league representatives: “More is not always better.
“You have probably heard that Fifa is conducting a feasibility study into holding a World Cup every two years.
“We think that the jewel of the World Cup had value precisely because of its rarity and holding it every two years will lead to more randomisation, less legitimacy and unfortunately dilute the World Cup itself.
“Our players do not need to spend more of their summers consuming tournaments rather than spending it in relaxation.”
Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City and Spurs all had senior representatives in the room after they were allowed to rejoin the ECA after recanting their Super League dalliance.
They heard new ECA head Nasser Al-Khelaifi, also chairman of PSG, describe the Super League plotters as “fabulists and failures” who had attempted a “midnight coup”.
Al-Khelaifi dismissed the three remaining “rebels” – Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus – as fighting a battle they have already lost.
The PSG chief, whose club refused to join the breakaway 12 said: “While the three rebel-clubs waste energies, twist narratives and continue to shout at the sky, the rest of us are moving forward and focusing every energy on building a better future for European football – together as one.
“This “not-Super League” was defeated through integrity, togetherness, and protecting the interests of every member of our European football community.
“Over the past few months, European football has faced challenges like never before.
“People have tried to divide us; they have tried to separate us; they have tried to make us weaker. They have failed.
“In fact, they have achieved the exact opposite – they brought us together. They have made us stronger.”
