Romelu Lukaku has returned to Chelsea following a hapless first spell that lasted three years and saw him making a mere 15 appearances across all competitions until his departure in 2014.

And Lukaku has returned to Stamford Bridge in style by becoming the club's record signing following a £97.5million deal with Inter Milan.

The star striker has also become the team's highest earner as he now makes a staggering £325,000 per week.

That dwarfs the next highest earner N'Golo Kante, who is currently on £290,000 a week.

As mentioned earlier, the Belgium international won't participate today against Crystal Palace as he wasn't registered in time for the Premier League opener

Crystal Palace finished 14th last season under previous manager Roy Hodgson, who resigned at the end of the campaign after leading the team to 12 wins and 18 losses in 38 matches.

It's the dawning of a new age at Palace and new boss Patrick Vieira has a lot of work today as the Eagles have been enduring a rather poor record against Chelsea.

After winning back-to-back away league games against the Blues in the 2015-2016 and 2016-2017 season, Palace have lost all of their last four visits to Stamford Bridge by an aggregate score of 11-2.

But the Eagles have won two of their last three Premier League openers and kept a clean sheet in all of those three matches

Chelsea are coming fresh from their European Super Cup triumph after finishing fourth in the Premier League table last season following a late surge under Thomas Tuchel, who replaced Frank Lampard last January.

The Blues won 19 out of 38 matches, which was the lowest return out of the entire top four, and lost nine times, which was the joint worst tally.

Tuchel, though, managed to patch up his problematic defence and only conceded 36 goals, which was the second lowest number behind Premier League champions Manchester City.

The west Londoners should be feeling confident today against Crystal Palace as they have won 16 of their last 20 league meetings against the Eagles, losing only four times along the way.

But Tuchel may want to be careful as Chelsea lost two of their last three Premier League games of the previous season, more than they had in their previous 16 under the German manager

Chelsea and Crystal Palace's first ever encounter took place way back in 1969 during a First Division match in London that ended with a 1-1 draw.

Since then, the two sides have faced off a total of 40 times with the Blues winning  a majority of 24 matches, compared to Palace's mere seven victories across all competitions.

The west Londoners won both ties against the Eagles last season with a score of 4-0 at Stamford Bridge and 4-1 away at Selhurst Park.

Palace haven't been able to beat Chelsea since 2017 when they won 2-1 at home, the reigning European champions won all seven meetings since that defeat

Welcome to our live coverage of the Premier League clash between Chelsea and Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues are hoping for another glittering campaign just like last term, which saw them winning the Champions League against reigning Prem champions Manchester City and making it to the FA Cup Final following a rough start.

Manager Thomas Tuchel has made his intentions known with the signing of star striker Romelu Lukaku from Inter Milan, but today's league opener comes too soon for the Belgium international who won't be involved.

Tuchel will also be without Hakim Ziyech, who suffered a shoulder injury in the midweek during the European Super Cup triumph against Villarreal, while N'Golo Kante has "some issues" following that match and is a doubt.

New Palace manager Patrick Vieira, on the other hand, will be missing summer loan signing Conor Gallagher, who is ineligible to face his parent club.

Captain Luka Milivojevic is absent due to personal reasons whereas Ebere Eze and Nathan Ferguson are long-term absentees after both injured their Achilles in May.

Michael Olise is out with a back injury but due to return to training this month, but Vieira looks set to hand out debuts to Marc Guehi and Joachim Andersen
