Soutar dubbed best player in Scotland after comeback win against Noppert

Alan Soutar is the toast of Scottish darts after another stunning performance at the World Championship.

Having worked four consecutive days over the festive period, including on Christmas Day, the firefighter was back on Alexandra Palace duty for his third round clash against Danny Noppert.

The Dutchman, the pre-match favourite, raced into a 2-0 lead, only for Soutar to fight back brilliantly with some stupendous finishing, including a 152 checkout to go 3-2 up.

The 44-year-old, who is also a guide dog trainer in his spare time, then wrapped up a 4-2 victory to book a last-16 clash with German Gabriel Clemens.

The brilliant performance, the latest in his growing list at the Ally Pally, was hailed by darts fans across the UK, but especially in Scotland, where Soutar is fast becoming a household name.

With Scottish players Peter Wright and Gary Anderson, who lost to Chris Dobey this afternoon, out of the tournament, some fans are even touting him as the country’s best player.

“Superb player, best in Scotland right now,” declared one. “What a performance. What a guy. Get in!,” said another.

Another fan commented: “What a performance from Alan Soutar!”

Alluding to his festive shifts, darts writer Phil Lanning tweeted: “Incredible. Just 48 hours after a 14-hour shift, fireman Alan Soutar comes from two sets down to beat Dutch star Danny Noppert 4-2 including red-hot 152 and 130 finishes. Soutar now into last 16 of the World Championship.”
