Anton Danyluk was unveiled as one of 12 new islanders to head into the Love Island villa in 2019. However, in the build-up to the ITV2 series, a photo showing Anton in blackface as A-Team actor Mr T was discovered by The Sun Online. The picture emerging online has prompted several fans of the show and former islanders to call for Anton to be removed from this year’s Love Island cast.
Will Anton Danyluk be dropped from Love Island after Mr T blackface photo?
Anton Danyluk has not been dropped from the Love Island 2019 lineup and will appear in the ITV series.
ITV released a statement to Express.co.uk from Anton’s mother regarding the photos.
The Love Island star’s mum said: “Given that Anton has no right to reply, I wanted to take the opportunity to assure everyone that my son, who himself is mixed heritage, is not a racist.
“As his mother I know he would be mortified to be labelled in such a way, and would wholeheartedly apologise to anyone offended by this picture.
“There was absolutely no racist intent and almost six years down the line, I know it’s not the way Anton would ever behave today.”
After the photos were discovered, a number of Love Island fans and former cast members were left outraged.
Marcel Somerville, who starred on Love Island in 2017, told The Sun on Sunday: “Blackface was a form of entertainment that comedians and actors used to do. But we all know it’s just not funny and simply not acceptable anymore.
“In my opinion, it hasn’t been acceptable for decades, so to hear that someone still thinks it’s okay to make fun of people’s skin colour is absolutely ridiculous.
“It’s racist, and for him to stay on the show now with no repercussions is not okay.”
Somerville’s words were echoed by a number of Love Island fans on social media.
One furious fan wrote: “So Anton Danyluk, one of the new contestants from Love Island has images on his Facebook of him in blackface.
“@LoveIsland @ITV get him off the f****** cast, I can guarantee none of us want this racist p**** on our screens.”
A second Love Island fan also wrote: “Love Island hasn’t even started yet and I’m already cancelling Anton for doing blackface, that ain’t it luv (sic).”
While a third agreed: “Drop racist Anton #loveisland. No excuses for his blackface.”
Before joining the show, Anton was a 24-year-old gym owner from Scotland.
When asked what made him the perfect islander, Anton said: “First of all, I am Scottish and I don’t think there has been a Scottish guy on the show before.
“Laura Anderson and Camilla Thurlow both got to the final. Hopefully, I’ll get further than them and win it!”
The 24-year-old also described his three best traits as: “I’m funny, I’m very hard working and I’m really motivated and I love to encourage and motivate people.
“My worst traits? I can be moody and I’m definitely an overthinker. Sometimes I can be a bit selfish.”
Anton also says his eyes are his best feature and that blondes are his “usual type”.
Whether Anton will find his perfect match in the villa is yet to be seen.
Love Island begins on Monday, June 3 at 9pm on ITV2.
