Britain’s Got Talent winner Jai McDowall used his £100,000 prize money on a sensible spend.
Rather than splurging on designer items or flashy cars, McDowall put it towards his future and paid off the mortgage on his home after struggling financially.
But he didn’t keep all the wealth to himself, sharing some of it with his brother and sister and contributing to his parents’ holiday.
He told Metro.co.uk: ‘I’m not gonna lie, I cried!
‘Before Britain’s Got Talent I’d been out of work and had financial difficulties. I had hardships like everyone else had. And this opportunity came along and allowed me to pay off my mortgage and do the house up as well.
‘I did that and just treated my family. My mum and dad were going to Mexico on holiday so I gave them some extra money. And my brother and sister as well. I tried to share the love a wee bit.
‘I try and make sure I do stuff for them because I’ve been really lucky and blessed to have the ability to do what I do. I wouldn’t be there without my family, they’ve been so supportive over the years and still are.’
McDowell won the show in 2011 – back when Michael McIntyre was on the panel – triumphing over 12-year-old finalist Ronan Parke.
After his big win he remembers one of the first things Simon Cowell said to him, and weirdly it was about presenter Ant McPartlin’s hair.
‘Just after I won they had the confetti coming down and at one point it stuck on Ant’s hair,’ he explained.
‘Simon was kind of trying to tell me to take it off Ant’s hair. Of course I’m looking at Simon Cowell who at this point was a god and I’m like, “What’s he trying to say to me? What’s happening? I don’t know what my life is right now” then I realised and I was like, “Right okay”.
The singer has no regrets about going on the show and despite auditioning for The X Factor three times previously, he is glad that he launched his career the way he did on Britain’s Got Talent.
He said: ‘It’s been brilliant career wise and getting into the industry. I went on the show because it was my dream to be a singer and to have a career as a singer, and I’ve achieved that.’
Britain’s Got Talent airs tonight from 7.30pm on ITV.
