Earlier this year, This Morning announced Dermot O’Leary and Alison Hammond would be taking over from Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford as the show’s Friday presenters. When the shake-up was revealed, the ITV show faced some initial backlash from upset viewers and the X Factor host has now addressed the criticism.

In a recent interview, Dermot was asked if he was aware of the scepticism at the time or if he was intent on focussing on the new role.

He said: “A bit of both, to be honest. That’s part and parcel of the job, and we’ve worked in the industry a long time now.

“Unless you start a brand-new show, you’ll always do someone else’s job and someone will always end up doing yours.”

“That’s no one’s fault – that’s just the industry,” he remarked.

“Obviously you’re aware of the broader story, and people are entitled to their opinions.”

“But I think some of it was quite thinly veiled in its criticism of Alison,” Dermot said.

“And you don’t have to scratch too far beneath the surface to see something slightly more unsavoury, which I really take umbrage with.

“So yes, you’re aware of it, but you put it to one side because you can’t please everyone.”

“You can only be authentic and if people like it, that’s great,” he told The Sun’s Fabulous magazine.

Dermot and Alison present This Morning on Fridays while Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby host the rest of the week.

Eamonn and Ruth are still a part of the This Morning family and step in to present during the school holidays.

The presenting stalwart revealed he avoids Googling his name but does take a peek at his book reviews.

Dermot said: “For the eleventh year in a row you named us as the Best Daytime show at the NTAs and here it is.”

“And as you know, we are quite subtle here at This Morning and we don’t like to brag, we don’t like to boast, we’re just not like that,” Alison added. “We’d just like to say a very polite thank you.”

“Yeah, do you know what? Let’s have a moment’s contemplation,” Dermot noted.

“Screw that! We won an NTA whoop whoop,” Alison interjected as confetti fell on the pair.

This Morning airs on ITV on weekdays at 10am.
