Denise Welch has revealed she was left with an injury after being slapped by Sally Dynevor in iconic Coronation Street scenes dating back to 1997.
The actress reminisced about her time on the ITV soap as it celebrates its 60th anniversary during today’s episode of Loose Women and cast her mind back to the moment Sally Metcalfe hit her across the face after discovering her husband Kevin’s (Michael Le Vell) affair with Natalie Barnes (played by Welch).
Speaking to her co-hosts Christine Lampard, Kéllé Bryan and Carol McGiffin, Denise recalled: ‘She [Sally] just absolutely didn’t want to do it and then the director went, “Sally, we’re running out of time! Just hit her!”
‘I had a massive big thing on my face!’
Denise added that she was shocked that her role of Natalie continued for four years.
‘When Natalie came in and was going to break up Kevin and Sally, I honestly thought there could be no shelf-life for that character beyond three months because obviously they were going to get back together and Natalie would be a name that would be banded about for years,’ she continued.
‘I think the audience, at that time, just wanted a character to love to hate.’
Sally shared her memories of the slap scene when she joined Loose Women in August.
‘I think Denise is the only character I have ever slapped that hard,’ she laughed when video calling into the show.
‘I really had to spend about 15 minutes apologising because I felt so bad,’ Sally continued.
‘But it worked so well we were such good friends, we were able to work it out between us.’
Sally also teased that Natalie could return in order to get her own back.
‘I really want your character to come back, Natalie come back,’ she demanded. ‘She should get her revenge on Sally next time!’
Loose Women airs weekdays at 12.30pm on ITV.
