EastEnders' Kara-Leah Fernandes’ ‘confident’ speech won British Soap Awards

Kara-Leah Fernandes had everyone on the edge of their seats with her acceptance speech at the British Soap Awards.

The EastEnders star won the Best Young actor prize at the annual ceremony on Saturday night, but she also won the hearts of the audience members and viewers at home with her ‘eloquent and confident’ speech.

The young actor, who portrays Bailey Baker in the BBC soap, walked onto the stage with her on-screen father Roger Griffiths, before bringing out her notes to share some adorable words.

She said: ‘Thank you, I didn’t know what a nomination was before this.

‘I want to thank God first. The EastEnders team creates such a witty and mature character who is raising awareness for young carers.’

The actress added: ‘I have a disabled brother so I can relate to Bailey a bit.

‘Thank you to my amazing EastEnders family, my agency TTA, and all of my family and school teachers.’

Her words left audience members visibly taken aback and viewers at home quickly flocked to Twitter to express their love for the young one.

One viewer wrote: ‘Kara-Leah Fernandes is brilliant! So eloquent and confident too. Very well deserved. #soapawards’

Another said: ‘Aww Kara-Leah Fernandes is just the cutest!! What a lovely speech from a witty, intelligent young actor. Her future is very bright indeed! #SoapAwards.’

‘@SoapAwards What a lovely acceptance speech from little Kara-leah Fernandez and didn’t she look as pretty as a princess @bbceastenders,’ one commented.

Praising the star, a fan posted: ‘Big congratulations to Kara-Leah Fernandes who won the best young actors award.

‘Highlighting all those brave young carers out there who go unnoticed. The games a bore so far anyway.’

And Kara-Leah’s night did not end there as she also won the Best On-Screen Partnership award alongside Roger who plays Mitch Baker, her character’s father.

This time it was Roger’s turn to say some words, but we must admit that we wished Kara-Leah had another turn.

Speaking of his co-star he called her ‘a true talent.’
