Just over a year after her tenure as Cersei Lannister came to an end, Lena Headey has been confirmed to star in the upcoming indie thriller, Gypsy Moon.

From director Gigi Gaston, Headey will portray the title character, a burlesque dancer who finds a second lease of life.

The drama ensues when Gypsy Moon goes on the run to protect her young neighbor when his life is threatened by her ex-lover, and a bond eventually develops between them.

The young star of Jack Ryan and upcoming musical In the Heights Dean Scott Vazquez plays the protagonist’s neighbour, while the Avatar franchise’s leading man Sam Worthington steps in as her ex-boyfriend.

Award-winning star of the Insidious series Barbara Hershey also joins the cast, along with La La Anthony, Cam Gigandet, Martin Sensmeier and Emma Holzer in supporting roles.

Gypsy Moon is set to be one of La La Anthony’s first acting gigs after her recurring stint on the hit Starz series Power came to an end at the start of this year.

Filming has recently wrapped up in Los Angeles, so a release date could be expected as soon as next year.

In a statement, director Gigi Gaston thanked producers Gary Pearl, Cassian Elwes, Mark Damon and casting director Mary Vernieu.

She continued: “I am thankful for our amazing cast. You can write a great story but without all of these people believing in my film it would have been unrealized.

“Lena completed the dream. I waited a long time for her. She is my Cinderella that fits Gypsy’s slipper to a tee.”

The film’s lead Lena Headey also praised Gaston’s work on the film, and explained why she initially signed on to the project.

Headey said: “Gigi is someone you can’t say no to, you just get caught up with her passion and heart.”

“Going back to my roots of indie filmmaking has been a joy. Moving fast and making what time you have count, is what I love.”

The Bermudan-English star of Game of Thrones was catapulted to international success thanks to her magnetic performance as Cersei, one of the series’ most iconic villains.

Her fierce performance as the ruthless Lannister lasted the series’ entire run, though she was tragically killed in the final season.

However, her work on the big and small screen predates the fantasy drama by almost two decades, starting with small roles in Waterworld and The Remains of the Day.

Her work in both blockbusters and smaller scale pictures have received acclaim, and films such as Dredd, The Purge and Fighting With My Family have attracted considerable followings.

Next up for the actress is Twist, a modern re-imagining of Charles Dickens’ classic Oliver Twist starring Michael Caine and Rita Ora.

She also joins the ensemble cast of assassin thriller Gunpowder Milkshake, alongside Karen Gillan (Avengers: Endgame), Angela Bassett (Black Panther) and Michelle Yeoh (Crazy Rich Asians).

Game of Thrones is available to stream on Now TV. Power Book II: Ghost continues Sundays on Starz and Starzplay.
