Holby Citys Carole dies in emotional scenes as BBC viewers praise Dementia plot

Holby City viewers said an emotional goodbye to one of the soaps most beloved character’s after Carole finally lost her tragic battle with Dementia.

Fans saw the usually lovable and warm character, played by Julia Deakin, act out moving scenes that fans have dubbed “superb” as the show tackles a sensitive storyline.

In her touching final scenes, as Carole’s condition worsens, Sacha convinces Dom to take his mum on a promised trip to a fishing lake they used to visit with his dad.

Sacha gives Carol and her son Dom some much-needed time together where an emotional Dan was able to talk about his sadness that his father Barry hadn’t come to see her.

"You’re better and stronger and kinder than both me and him put together,” he said.

As the pair reminisce, Carole has a final moment of clarity before she dies, as she uttered her final words to her beloved son Dan: “Dazzle, my special boy.”

Fans immediately took to Twitter to share their heartbreak and praise the show for tackling such a sensitive storyline with sensitivity and promoting awareness of the disease.”

One tweeted: “Props to the researchers & team at #HolbyCity for depicting the final stages of dementia in a “ suitable for pre watershed way. It’s horrific in IRL .

Another gushed: “Sobbing my heart out at #HolbyCity, my grandma currently has dementia so I've been going through it with Carole and also here at home. well done”

A third said: “These scenes with Carole have been superbly filmed.”

The official Alzheimer's Society Twitter page also acknowledged the moving scenes, saying: “We're currently tuned into Carole and Dom's emotional dementia storyline. If you're affected by dementia and need support, we're here for you.” Before leaving a helpline number.

In earlier scenes fans saw some touching moments between Henrik Hanssen and Carole, as he finally made himself visit her before she died.

Later on he admitted to Russ that there was a time when he thought he and Carole might become more than dance partners, and Carole left a small clue when Hanssen asked her, “Can I get you anything, Carole?” and she replied, “Love.”

Elsewhere, Oliver Valentine’s return coincided with renewed hope for terminally ill Sammy Carrington, as Ollie and Russ discovered that Sammy’s tumour is operable in what will be a high-risk last effort to save him.
