In 2019 it was announced Disney was rebooting the Home Alone movies with a brand new cast and plot. The original eponymous movie was released in 1990 and starred child star Macaulay Culkin. The cult movie only cost $18 million to make but earned more than $475 million at the box office. The film then spawned four sequels, with the latest one being released in 2012. Next year, Disney’s Home Alone will be released with a brand new vision.

This week Kenan Thompson, who is involved in the new movie, spoke out about the new film’s release.

He explained he thinks the movie is almost ready for cinemas.

The Saturday Night Live star said: “It was a long shoot. It started in Canada and got shut down and then came back around because of the pandemic and stuff.

“It’s been very splotchy, I guess, as far as trying to get it done is concerned, but I think they’re getting very close to finishing it.”

Director of the first movie, Chris Columbus, previously spoke out about the new film’s adaptation, however.

The Harry Potter director has been quite vocal in not wanting his beloved franchise rebooted anymore.

Speaking to Insider in 2020, Chris called the project a “waste of time”.

He then asked: “What’s the point? I’m a firm believer that you don’t remake films that have had the longevity of Home Alone.”

Hitting out at the new movie again, Chris said: “You’re not going to create lightning in a bottle again. It’s just not going to happen. So why do it?

“It’s like doing a paint-by-numbers version of a Disney animated film – a live-action version of that. What’s the point? It’s been done.”

He then offered some advice to other directors who might be tempted to reboot classic films.

The director said: “Do your own thing. Even if you fail miserably, at least you have come up with something original.”

The new version of Chris’ Home Alone has an entirely new cast.

Youngster Archie Yates is taking on the role of Max, the child who is left at home alone.

Archie is best known for playing the supporting role of Yorki in Taika Waititi’s Jojo Rabbit.

The young actor is joined by such notable names as Rob Delaney, Ellie Kemper, Kenan and Chris Parnell.

Plot details about the reboot have not yet been revealed, but news is due to drop in the near future.

The original film’s lead actor, Culkin, is not reported to be involved in the movie in any way.

However, considering how good Disney is at keeping on-set secrets, he could show up at any point.

Home Alone is available to watch on Disney Plus.
