Riverdale season five has fast-forwarded seven years into the future where the group’s days at Riverdale High School are a distant memory and so are their previous relationships. But as Archie Andrews (played by KJ Apa) had all four reunited in a bid to save the town, this has stirred up some old feelings which have resurfaced. Archie has already been involved once again with two of his previous love interests.
WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Riverdale.
Archie and Betty (Lili Reinhart) had a passionate kiss in season four while they were both still with their other halves Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes) and Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse).
Betty put a stop to it before anything else happened but after the time jump, she and Archie started hooking up.
They ended things again though as Betty was dealing with the disappearance of her sister Polly Cooper (Tiera Skovbye) who now might be dead.
Shortly after their split, Archie then started dating ex-girlfriend Ronnie again but this is also up in the air as she had to stay behind in New York to sort out her messy split from husband Chad Gekko (Chris Mason).
Is Jughead still in love with Betty?
Archie might have had no problems with getting back into relationships with either of his previous loves but Jughead has found it more difficult to adjust.
Since his investigation of the Moth Man, Jughead has come to the realisation that he may be experiencing signs of trauma, some of which he has put down to his devastating break-up with Betty.
After she told him about kissing Archie as teenagers, Jughead and Betty were never the same and decided it would be best if they went their separate ways.
Out of the Core Four, Jughead has been the one to struggle the most in regards to his mental health with frequent partying, drug-taking and drinking.
In the midseason finale, Jughead took magic mushrooms in a bid to get rid of his writer’s block.
While under the influence, he started seeing hallucinations of Betty and imagined her kissing him in the bunker.
With Jughead’s wild behaviour and his subconscious showing signs that he is thinking of her, does this mean he is still in love with Betty seven years later?
Clinical psychologist Dr Tony Ortega is confident that the former beanie hat-wearing writer’s feelings haven’t changed since high school.

Dr Tony Ortega, who is also the author of self-help including #AreYouHereYet, told Express.co.uk: “I believe that Jughead is still very in love with Betty but his current battling of his inner demons prevent him from re-committing himself.
“He’s identifying himself too closely with his failures and measuring that up against Betty’s success.
“He’s probably thinking he’s not good enough for her.”
So while Tabitha Tate (Erin Westbrook) remains a possible romantic interest for Jughead, he might be holding back because of his childhood sweetheart.
Riverdale season five was last seen at the beginning of April with The Pincushion Man.
The teen drama will now be taking an extended break and won’t be returning for a few months.
Episode 11 of Riverdale series five will be shown on Wednesday, July 8.
Riverdale is available to watch on The CW and Netflix.
