One Coronation Street character looks set to meet a grisly end after almost 60 years in the ITV soap. Fans are growing increasingly worried for Rita Tanner after she returned to the cobbles for Super Soap Week, with Stephen Reid on the rampage.
Taking to Reddit, one user suggested: “Does anyone else think the twist might be Stephen killing Rita? I know it’s a bit left field but my thinking is as follows… They made a point of telling us that Rita was going out and then back in the afternoon.
“Stephen is clearly going to think it’s Jenny who took the passport so I think that’s where he’s headed. Could be a Jenny/Stephen showdown and Rita gets caught in the crossfire? Barbara Knox at 90 is on straight afterwards. Could she have asked for a big storyline to bow out on at a milestone age?”

Someone else agreed on X: “Wonder if Rita dies as the programme immediately following Corrie is all about Rita?” while a third wrote: “If Stephen comes after Jenny for the passport, will Rita get in the way? Is Barbara Knox bowing out? Conveniently there’s a programme to mark her 90th just after Friday’s episode…”
However, another eagle-eyed fan had another theory entirely as they suggested: “Plot twist: 90-year-old Rita murders Stephen in self defence after she finds him attacking her step-daughter. Corrie scriptwriters call me!" Another followed up: “Will Peter kill Stephen? Or Ed when he hears what he’s done to Michael? Or Rita poisons him! Best result I think.”
It comes after the news of a special ITV documentary to celebrate Barbara Knox as she turns 90, showcasing moments from her career and childhood. Malcolm Hebden – who played the late Norris Cole on the cobbles – will be returning to give his old friend his best wishes.
The programme, which airs tonight, will see her reunite with Coronation Street icon Thelma Barlow, who played Mavis Wilton for more than a quarter of a century. Bradley Walsh, host of The Chase and Corrie star in his own right, will be taking Barbara “on a trip down memory lane”.
Rita has been involved in plenty of high-octane storylines over the years, including the Blackpool tram storyline which saw her abuser Alan Bradley killed on the promenade back in 1989. The character was also diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2017.

So it’s not out of the question that even in her ninth decade, actress Barbara could be at the centre of the drama when it comes to serial killer Stephen’s showdown.
Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8pm on ITV.
