The Last Kingdom is a Netflix favourite and the series is based on The Saxon Stories by Bernard Cornwell. In 2020 it was revealed that season five would be the last, but the series would be followed by a feature-length film titled Seven Kings Must Die. Express.co.uk has all you need to know about whether the final season will air in February 2022.
Will The Last Kingdom season 5 air in February 2022?
The Last Kingdom fans were heartbroken to hear the Anglo-Saxon series would be coming to an end this year.
The final outing will be based on books nine and 10 from Cornwell’s collection, titled Warriors of the Storm and The Flame Bearer.
Filming for season five wrapped back in June 2021 and fans were hoping the new episodes would be released by the end of the year.
Sadly the season does not look like it is going to be released this month as it does not form part of Netflix’s schedule.
As for whether the show will return in February 2022, Netflix has not included it within the February schedule.
Some fans believe this is due to the release of Vikings Valhalla on February 25.
The Anglo-Saxon series falls in the same vein as The Last Kingdom, with many viewers having watched both series.
With this in mind, March or April could be the next available opportunities for the final season to air.
Season four launched at the end of April, so the next season could follow the same trend.
If this is the case, viewers could expect a release date in February or March.
The latest update from Carnival Films came on December 23, wishing fans a Merry Christmas.
msgoverndor commented: “I’m gonna re-watch from season one while I wait.”
beingabookwyrm said: “The best present we could get for the holidays is the season five release date PLEASE.”
The final season is expected to feature a time jump as it follows Aethelstan (Harry Gilby) as a young man.
The son of King Edward (Timothy Innes) was just a child at the end of the fourth season.
He was left under the close watch of Uhtred (Alexander Dreymon) who would train him as a fierce leader.
The final episodes should see the young man become the first King of England as the kingdoms are united.
Viewers took to Reddit to discuss when more news about the release will come to light.
Meravigliosa12 said: “I don’t expect S5 will drop before March, maybe into April, so I’m not surprised.
“If I recall correctly, past teasers didn’t come out until shortly before a season dropped.”
Life877 said: “They usually start promoting heavily about a month before release based on previous seasons. My guess is it wouldn’t be too far now.”
When it was revealed season five would be the last, actor Dreymon explained how this was always the plan.
At the time the first season was filmed, only 10 of Cornwell’s books had been written.
The final three books may be covered in the upcoming film, Seven Kings Must Die.
Production is due to start later in 2022 for the Netflix film, which should bring Uhtred’s story to a definitive end.
The Last Kingdom seasons 1-4 are on Netflix now.
