Too Close is a three-part thriller airing on ITV this week, and it follows a forensic psychiatrist and her patient. Doctor Emma Robertson is played by Emily Watson, and her patient Connie is played by Denise Gough. The nailbiting series was directed by Sue Tully, known for her work on Line of Duty and The A Word.
Who is Too Close director Sue Tully?
Too Close has just started airing on ITV and the dark series follows Connie, who is in a psychiatric hospital.
She claims to have forgotten the events leading up to a tragic incident, where she drove a car into a river with children present in the back.
Emma is sent in to try and get the truth out of Connie, who takes an interest in her new acquaintance.
The intimate show follows a series of one-to-one meetings between Connie and her psychiatrist, and they both have their secrets.
Fans are keen to know more about one of the leading lights behind the series, Sue Tully.
Tully is a 53-year-old English TV producer and director, who used to be an actress herself at the start of her career.
Her early roles included Suzanne Ross in Grange Hill and Michelle Fowler in the hit soap EastEnders.
She appeared in the very first episode of the British soap, back in 1985, and remained a part of the original cast for 10 years.
She then left the world of acting to explore work from the other side of the camera, as a director.
Tully went on to direct some EastEnders episodes, as well as shows like The Story of Tracy Beaker and The Bill.
Her other credits include Silent Witness, Britannia, Tin Star and most recently, Strike: Lethal White.
Fans fell in love with her latest venture, Too Close, after the very first episode which introduced the two intense characters.
One said on Twitter: “Just been watching Too Close on ITV. Absolutely brilliant. Just hate having to wait for tomorrow for the next episode.”
Another said: “I’ve always rather loved Emily Watson, so of course I rather enjoyed Too Close on ITV this evening.”
Other viewers described it as “gripping” and they are excited to tune in for the second of three episodes.

Tully’s directorial debut came after her long stint in EastEnders, having played the pregnant teenager following an affair with Den Watts (Leslie Grantham).
In December 2016, her role was recast and Jenna Russell took over, as Tully had turned down offers to return.
She did give the producers the ‘thumbs up’ to recast her character, so she could go on to achieve her directing dream.
She is still close friends with Letitia Dean, who played Sharon Watts in the hit soap.
Tully went on to direct the final episodes of season five of Line of Duty, including the 90-minute finale.
At the time, fans took to Twitter to comment on her talent, with one saying: “#lineofduty Sue Tully is a bloody good director – from this she will get her awards and recognised. This is gripping.” [Sic]
Another said: “Well done to everyone on #LineofDuty a great finale. Love that Sue Tully (aka Michelle from EastEnders) was the director, just spotted her in the pic. Bring on series 6.”
In episode two of Too Close, the dynamic between Emma and Connie will start to change as they begin to connect over each other’s dark pasts.
They are mutually unhappy with their lives, but who will be manipulated into giving their secrets away?
