Firefighters have swooped on the scene in Manhattan after the horror smash, which left the aircraft on fire.
It is understood the pilot has been injured in the crash, with their condition not yet known.
The building the helicopter has crashed into is 54 storeys high.
The cause of the crash is not yet clear, but it has been reported that the pilot may have been trying to land.
New York Police Department said: “There was a helicopter hard landing on the roof of 787 7th Avenue in Midtown Manhattan.
“Fire has been extinguished. Please continue to avoid the area”

Following the crash people in the city shared images of the aftermath on Twitter.
People were also ordered to evacuate, with one witness saying they felt the building shake.
