Helen Skelton's split from Richie Myler forced her to quit radio show

EXCLUSIVE Revealed: Helen Skelton’s acrimonious split from husband Richie Myler forced her to quit her Radio 5 Live show

  • The radio presenter, 40, quit her Radio 5 Live show live on air over the weekend
  • She split from her husband Richie Myler in April 2022; he is in a new relationship

Helen Skelton’s acrimonious separation with former husband Richie Myler forced her to quit her Radio 5 Live show, we can reveal.

The former Strictly star, 40, shocked listeners last week by announcing her departure from the station, claiming she wanted to spend more time with her children.

She told co-host Steve Crossman during her final show that her decision was a reluctant one, adding: ‘I’m not alright about it but you know, needs must. The juggle is real. An eight-year-old with a sideline needs me.’

But MailOnline can reveal the barb was aimed at Myler – the father of their three children Ernie, eight, Louis, six, and Elsie Kate, one – who according to pals, is not sharing childcare duties fairly.

The rugby league ace, 33, is in a new relationship with Stephanie Thirkill, the daughter of the multimillionaire President of his club Leeds Rhinos, and the couple welcomed a new child together in May.

It has now been revealed that her acrimonious split from husband Richie Myler (pictured together in 2012) was behind the decision

A friend of the star said: ‘Helen is a fighter and will always do the best for her children.

‘But she’s been spread fairly wide in terms of taking care of the kids’ needs and, to put it bluntly, Richie is not matching her commitment.

‘He has his new baby and rugby career, meaning he hasn’t been able to help as much as he would ideally like.

‘And it’s Helen who has been forced to make the most sacrifices, as the thought one of her kids could be playing sport with neither of their parents watching and cheering them on, breaks her heart.

‘That’s why she felt she had no choice but to quit the Sunday show, despite the fact she didn’t really want to as it was a great opportunity in her career and she loved doing it.’

Helen is being replaced by former Love Island presenter Laura Whitmore, 38, having fronted the weekend show for the past year.

Mailonline have approached Helen’s reps for comment.

The ex-Blue Peter presenter announced her split with Myler – her husband of eight years – in an Instagram post in April 2022, writing: ‘Very sad to say that Richie and I are no longer a couple. He has left the family home. We will be doing our best to co-parent our small children.’

Ex: The television presenter, 39, announced her split from England and Leeds Rhinos rugby league star Richie, 33, in April last year

The break-up was confirmed just four months after the arrival of Helen and Richie’s daughter, leaving the former Countryfile host ‘devastated’.

In the wake of the split, a source close to the couple told MailOnline at the time: ‘Helen is absolutely devastated. Now she is contemplating life without him while he has moved on with his new partner.

‘Richie is insisting there was no crossover, that he began the romance with Stephanie after their marriage collapsed, but Helen feels let down. They are still married, and their baby is literally four months old.

‘She thought their marriage was safe and secure and is totally shocked by what’s happened.’

Since the split, Helen has put their marital home on the market as she looks to make a fresh start with her three children.

The TV favourite also sold many of her belongings, including some of the former couple’s wedding gifts, during an appearance on Really series, Celebrity Yorkshire Auction House.

However her appearance on BBC1 series Strictly Come Dancing is Helen’s most high-profile TV job following her marriage break-up, in which she finished runner up with partner Gorka Márquez.

She admitted a big reason for signing up for the show was to cheer her up, admitting: ‘I did Strictly this year because sometimes you just need to jump on the opportunity and chance to put a big smile on your face.’

And in reference to her ex-husband becoming a father again with his new partner, Helen told the Telegraph: ‘You cannot have any opinion on anyone else’s life until you’ve walked in those shoes. And my family are happy, my kids are happy, and that’s all ultimately that matters.

‘I don’t see myself as a victim.

‘There are a lot of people who have been in my situation who haven’t been given the opportunities that I’ve got.’

She continued: ‘Don’t get me wrong, I have my days when I’m p****d off. But equally, in this job, you’re in a lot of people’s lives, which gives you a phenomenal amount of perspective.

‘I think mine is a job that gives you lots of perspective, so it’s very difficult to say ‘woe is me.’

In April, it was announced Helen is hosting a new Channel 5 series with friend Dan Walker called Dan & Helen’s Pennine Adventure, which starts on Tuesday.

MailOnline has also approached Richie for comment.
