‘Hero’ dad-of-seven dies after rescuing his children from being swept out to sea

An inquest has opened for a heroic dad who tragically died after saving two of his kids at sea after getting into difficulty.

Jonathan Stevens, 36, – a dad of seven – had been on a family beach trip with his kids, when two were caught in a riptide.

The Telford dad was visiting Barmouth beach with the tragedy occurred on Sunday, August 2.

Mr Stevens was able to pull his kids to safety, however, he was found unresponsive in the water later, the inquest heard on Monday.

A major rescue operation was launched, with a lifeboat and Coastguard search and rescue helicopter dispatched.

He was airlifted to hospital, but was sadly pronounced dead at around 3.15pm in Ysbyty Gwynedd, Bangor that day.

The investigation in to Mr Stevens' death is still ongoing, reports Daily Record.

The inquest held in Caernarfon has now been adjourned pending the outcome of the investigation.

Tributes poured in for Mr Stevens after news of his tragic death broke.

Family friends also launched an online fundraiser in his memory with all donations given to Mr Stevens' children.

Following his death his partner Laura Burford, who was at their home in Telford when the incident happenned, said she was "absolutely devastated" to have lost "the love of [her] life".

The heartbroken girlfriend said the dad from Telford, Shropshire, had died a hero "saving their babies".

In a statement to North Wales Live provided by a relative, the 34-year-old, said: "I am absolutely devastated to say that I have lost the complete love of my life.

"All seven of his beautiful kids have lost their dad. He died saving his kids' lives in the sea.

"There are no words to describe the pain. I will always be grateful to him for bringing our babies back.

"I love him, always have and always will."
