Inside grim world of infamous Rikers prison with inmate sitting in own faeces

New images from the infamous US prison Rikers Island show the horrifying living conditions inmates are subjected to.

The images were shown to Manhattan, New York, prosecutors by the Board of Correction last month – detailing the nightmare prisoners there have to live with.

Staffing shortages have hampered the New York department of corrections and images show an inmate sitting in his own poo for 11 hours in the intake centre before being given new clothes.

The images were shown to hundreds of prosecutors at District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office.

Another man was trapped in a decontamination room for 24 hours. He was eventually taken out on the gurney having self-harmed.

Around 200 to 300 prosecutors were shown the images, according to the New York Post.

There were also images of unresponsive detainees being carried downstairs and across hallways by fellow inmates to try and get them help.
