Meghan’s estranged dad Thomas ‘very pleased’ about birth of new granddaughter

Meghan Markle's estranged father has sent his best wishes to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex following the birth of the couple's daughter.

Prince Harry and Meghan announced on Sunday that Meghan had given birth to their daughter Lilibet “Lili” Diana Mountbatten-Windsor on Friday.

Following the happy news, Thomas said he wished them “all my love."

Speaking to the Sun, he said: "I’m very pleased that my daughter and my new granddaughter had a successful delivery.

"I wish them all my love and the best of luck.”

Thomas and Meghan have not seen each other since before the latter's wedding to Harry in May 2018.

Their relationship soured when he admitted to agreeing to stage newspaper pictures of himself for cash.

The 76-year-old claims he has apologised "100 times" to Prince Harry and his daughter but they still won't talk to him.

According to royal biographer Robert Jobson, it is unlikely Thomas will be meeting his new granddaughter anytime soon.

He told the Daily Mail: "As it stands it seems unlikely that either grandfather will meet their new granddaughter for some time.

Nigel Cawthorne, author of Call Me Diana: The Princess of Wales on Herself, agrees with Jobson, adding: "In due course, he very likely will, but at the moment he won't be at the top of the couple's list for obvious reasons."

On the other side of Lilibet's family, the Queen, Prince Charles and Prince William have all said they are "delighted" with the news of her birth, a statement from Buckingham Palace said.

Relations are currently strained between the royal family and Harry and Meghan.

The new arrival's name Lilibet “Lili” Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, was a sweet nod to Harry’s grandmother, Queen Elizabeth and his late mother, Princess Diana.

A Buckingham Palace spokesperson said: "The Queen, The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall, and The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have been informed and are delighted with the news of the birth of a daughter for The Duke and Duchess of Sussex."

Prime Minister Boris Johnson also sent his wishes to the Sussexes tonight, writing: "Many congratulations to The Duke & Duchess of Sussex on the birth of their daughter."
