Prince William and Kate Middleton’s Royal Wedding was one of the most watched events in television history – but a calm and collected Wills still managed to crack a joke with his wife-to-be’s dad.
Tomorrow (April 29) marks 10 years since the Cambridges tied the knot in front of an estimated global audience of more than 2 billion people.
There was also the small matter of 1,900 guests packed into the Westminster Abbey to watch the future king marrying his university sweetheart.
But lip readers were still able to pick up on a cheeky comment Wills made to his dad-in-law Michael Middleton just moments before getting married.
Cameras filmed Kate arriving at the altar with her dad as a beaming William and best man Harry watched on.
According to the Mirror, the duke told Kate: “You look lovely. You look beautiful.”
He then leaned across to tell Michael: “We’re supposed to have just a small family affair.”
Kate and her dad burst into laughter at the comment before the attention turned to the all important ceremony.
The loved-up royal couple dated for eight years before getting engaged, with one royal expert claiming Wills wanted to make sure his girlfriend really knew what she was letting herself in for.
He finally proposed to the love of his life in October 2010 during a holiday in Kenya.
But it wasn’t until November 16 that the engagement was formally announced by Clarence House.
It is thought the reason for the delayed announcement was the tragic death of Kate’s grandfather Peter Middleton.
The Queen is expected to honour her granddaughter-in-law with a special tribute after getting through 10 years of marriage “without so much as a moan”.
In the build-up to the wedding, there were fears that William and Kate could make the same blunder as Princess Diana and Prince Charles 30 years earlier.
The late royal is said to have called her hubby-to-be "Philip" during the ceremony, according to the BBC.
