A man who went on a rampage with a bow and arrow in the Norwegian town of Kongsberg has been named as 37-year-old Espen Andersen Bråthen.

Five people were killed by Bråthen, who is a Danish citizen, after he attacked people in what police say is an "act of terrorism".

The victims include four women and one man during the rampage with a police officer among others left injured.

Bråthen managed to get away from officers after they initially confronted him after he began firing arrows at them.

He was arrested around half an hour later at 6.47pm following a wave of terror in the village using a bow and arrow.

A statement issued by PST, Norway's security service, said: "The incidents in Kongsberg appear at the moment to be an act of terrorism, but the investigation, which is led by the South-East police district, will clarify in more detail what the incidents were motivated by."

According to Sky News, Bråthen has been convicted several times in the past and previously identified as showing signs of radicalisation.

He was also handed a six-month restraining order against two family members last year after he made threats to kill both of them.

Bråthen was also convicted for burglary and for possession of cannabis in 2012.

There have also been reports that Bråthen made a video posted YouTube about converting to Islam but has since been delated, according to Sky News.

Police say they are investigating to see whether Bråthen's actions could "inspire" more violent acts in the future.

The PST statement continued: ""PST is working to investigate whether what has happened could inspire others to commit serious acts of violence, in the form of follow-up actions, revenge actions and more."

According to VG, his mother is Danish and he does have Danish citizenship but Bråthen was born in Norway.

Bråthen has admitted to carrying out the attack and has been charged with the murders.
