Ruth Lacey, the principal of Beacon HS in Hell’s Kitchen, is proof positive that you can do quite nicely by smiling at “social justice” insanity.
Lacey has been allegedly accepting luxury gifts from parents in violation of Department of Education ethics rules, The Post’s Susan Edelman reports. Tokens of appreciation such as “a cashmere sweater, designer handbag, leather gloves and pashmina wrap, all in her favorite color, hot pink,” sources say.
Perhaps she figured it was only her fair share, as she’s cheered on extremely aggressive fund-raising by the school’s Parent-Teacher Association: “It will take $400,000 — and together our community can do it,” Lacey wrote parents last fall about funding for extra-curriculars and college counseling.
The cash flowed in, as it often does at Beacon: The PTA reported raising nearly $700,000 in 2018.
But it’s Lacey’s own ethics that truly raise eyebrows — and not just her plainly flouting DOE rules limiting parent presents to “gifts that are principally sentimental in nature and of small financial value.”
As one parent summed it up: “I find it hypocritical that Principal Lacey supports social-justice activism against ‘white privilege’ but gladly accepts our green dollars.”
That’s a reference to a December student sit-in that Lacey supported and praised — triggered by the school-wide ruckus over supposed faculty racism after one student (eavesdropping on a private conversation) overheard another complaining about being wait-listed for a top university while others with lower test scores got in.
Maybe the kids will hold another sit-in over Lacey’s privilege?
