Tornado warning issued for Long Island after severe thunderstorm hits New York City with hail stones and heavy winds

A THUNDERSTORM hit New York City Saturday, sending hail across the five boroughs and a possible tornado through Long Island.

Heavy rain and wind gusts reaching 40mph were an issue too as the sky turned dark from the storm.

A tornado warning was issued for parts of Long Island by The National Weather Service. The warning was issued from Hewlett to Levittown.

Meteorologists believe two tornados may have merged on Long Island. "This will be an event we remember for quite some time," said meteorologist Matthew Cappucci.

Reports of hail were found from Tottenville in Staten Island to Woodlawn in the Bronx and even hit parts of New Jersey.

Ice also started to accumulate in some areas as well.

Wind restrictions have caused all the upper-level lanes of the Verrazzano Bridge to close. Commuters are being asked to seek alternate routes.

There have also been reports of power outages in Staten Island, causing Con Edison to respond.
