WASHINGTON — President Trump called Nixon’s White House Counsel John Dean a “sleazebag” in a tweet Sunday.
The president once again hammered Democrats for wanting a “Redo, or Do Over” on the heels of special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation wrapping up.
House Judiciary Chairman Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.) is kicking off a series of Mueller-related hearings on Capitol Hill Monday with an appearance from Dean.
“They are even bringing in @CNN sleazebag attorney John Dean,” Trump commented. “Sorry, no Do Overs – Go back to work!” he told the Democrats.
Dean is a CNN contributor and has been critical of Trump.
He became a household name during the Watergate era, when as White House counsel he agreed to help prosecutors.
He gave key testimony linking President Nixon to the burglary of the Democratic National Committee headquarters, which was in one of the Watergate buildings at the time.
In his Sunday tweets, Trump said the Democrats were “devastated” by the contents of the Mueller report, saying it was a “disaster for them.”
Since the report’s release — and an appearance by Mueller himself at the Justice Department — additional Democrats have said they supported opening an impeachment inquiry, as the report laid out an obstruction of justice case, but Mueller said he was following Justice Department guidelines, which prevent the indictment of a sitting president.
