Can mobile hairdressers work from April 12?
Some of the Covid lockdown rules on what you can and cannot do will change on Monday April 12, 2021.
As part of Boris Johnson's roadmap, hairdressers can reopen during the second phase to freedom in England.
It'll be a relief for shaggy-haired Brits who are getting increasingly fed up with being unable to go for a trim during months of lockdown.
The PM has confirmed that the next step out of lockdown gives the green light for firms in the personal care sector to reopen, including hairdressers, mobile hairdressers and nail salons, from April 12.
From April 12, 2021, these changes take place in England
England will enter the second stage out of Covid lockdown from April 12:
- Non-essential retail can reopen
- Personal care premises such as hairdressers and nail salons will be able to reopen
- Public buildings such as libraries and community centres can reopen
- Outdoor hospitality venues can reopen, with table service only
- Most outdoor attractions including zoos, theme parks, and drive-in performances (such as cinemas and concerts) will be able to reopen
- Some smaller outdoor events such as fetes, literary fairs, and fairgrounds can take place
- Indoor leisure and sports facilities can reopen for individual exercise, or exercise with your household or support bubble
- All childcare and supervised activities will be allowed indoors (as well as outdoors) for all kids. Parent and child groups can take place indoors (as well as outdoors) for up to 15 people (kids under five aren't counted in this number)
- Weddings, civil partnership ceremonies, wakes and other commemorative events will be able to take place for up to 15 people (anyone working is not included in this limit). Wedding receptions can also take place for up to 15 people, but must take place outdoors, not including private gardens
- Self-contained accommodation will be able to open for overnight stays in England with your household or support bubble
- But, you should continue to minimise the amount that you travel where possible
- care home residents will be able to nominate two named individuals for regular indoor visits (following a rapid lateral flow test)
What rules will mobile hairdressers need to follow?
There should be good ventilation, for example opening doors, windows, and vents. This is to reduce the risk of aerosol transmission of the coronavirus.
There should also be frequent cleaning, good hand hygiene, and protective face masks being worn during the visit.
Given that mobile hairdressers provide close contact services, the government says hairdressers should wear both a clear visor or goggles and a Type II face mask to keep their clients safe.
Anyone who has Covid-19 symptoms is entitled to a free NHS test.
Rapid lateral flow test kits are free of charge for businesses registered in England, and for employees who cannot work from home until June 30, 2021.
But, you must register by 11.59pm on April 12, 2021. If your business is closed or you cannot provide tests now, you should still register so you can order tests in the future, says the government.
But mobile hairdressers should not use this service if you or your employees have Covid symptoms – order a PCR test and stay at home.
Mobile hairdressers should also take part in NHS Test and Trace by keeping a record of all your customers, visitors and staff for 21 days. This is a legal requirement.
What personal care & close contact firms must do for reopening on April 12, 2021
Personal care facilities and close contact services will reopen from April 12. This includes hair, beauty and nail salons; body and skin piercing services; tattoo studios; tanning salons; spas and massage centres (except for steam rooms and saunas) and holistic therapy, including acupuncture, homeopathy, and reflexology.
To protect staff and clients, those firms must:
- Complete a Covid-19 risk assessment
- Clean more often
- Remind customers and staff to wear face coverings in any indoor space
- Make sure everyone is social distancing
- Provide adequate ventilation
- Take part in NHS Test and Trace
- Turn people with coronavirus symptoms away
- Consider the mental health and wellbeing aspects of coronavirus for yourself and others
- Wear a visor and mask
- Keep clients apart
- Keep music and other background noise to a minimum to prevent people from speaking loudly or shouting
